Agents! If You’re Working Weekends, You’re Doing It All Wrong…

One of my favorite songs growing up was Loverboy’s hit single "Working for the Weekend." If you don’t know it, do yourself a favor—Google it. Better yet, watch the Saturday Night Live Chippendales skit with Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley. You’ll never be the same (in the best way possible).

Now, here’s the problem… while most people are working for the weekend, real estate agents are working ON the weekend. And evenings. And holidays. And their own vacations. Sound familiar?

Been There, Burned Out From That

My first year in real estate, I thought I had to be available 24/7. If a buyer called me at 9 p.m. to see a house, I was in my car by 9:05. Holidays? Didn’t matter. I distinctly remember showing $40K condos on Easter Sunday. Yes, it led to a sale. No, it wasn’t worth it.

Why? Because I was training my clients how to treat me. When I dropped everything at a moment’s notice, I taught them that was “normal.” And guess what? They expected it every time.

At the time, I didn’t mind because I loved real estate. But then my wife and I decided to start a family, and suddenly, working 60-80 hours a week wasn’t so appealing anymore.

The Big Lightbulb Moment 💡

After a couple of years, I started tracking my time (which, by the way, if you haven’t done—do it). And here’s what I found:

🔹 I spent 4-5x more time working with buyers than with sellers.
🔹 Most buyer showings happened during evenings, weekends and holidays.
🔹 Most listing appointments happened during normal business hours.

So I asked myself: If I want my nights and weekends back, what needs to change?

The Answer? Listings.

I made the business (and life-changing) decision to focus 100% of my efforts on getting listings instead of buyers.

✔️ Listings meant I controlled my schedule.
✔️ Listings meant I wasn’t spending hours driving buyers around town.
✔️ Listings meant I wasn’t missing out on life.

Now, don’t get me wrong—buyers are important. We still worked with them, but I delegated them to an agent on my team who actually enjoyed working with buyers. Win-win.

You Can Have a Life AND a Thriving Business

If you got into real estate because you love looking at houses, awesome! Keep working with buyers. But if you’re tired of missing family dinners, weekends, and vacations, then it might be time to shift your focus.

Because let’s be real—all the money in the world means nothing if you don’t have time to enjoy it.

So, tell me… are you working for the weekend, or are you just working on the weekend? Let’s chat about how to get your time (and sanity) back.
