The Unseen Gift of Today

In real estate, we often measure time in transactions—listing appointments, closings, contract deadlines. But outside of our calendars and CRM reminders, life is moving forward in ways we can’t predict.

Today is someone's first day in the business, filled with excitement and possibility. For someone else, it's their last, walking away from a career that shaped them. Somewhere, a couple is celebrating an engagement, while another family is saying goodbye to a loved one for the last time.

Today, a doctor delivered life-changing news—one person learned they have cancer, while another found out they’re expecting twins.

Too often, we focus on what we lack—more closings, more leads, more success—rather than recognizing what we already have. The truth is, today is a gift, and tomorrow is never promised.

A few years ago, my ex-wife and I took a cruise with friends. We laughed, made memories, and enjoyed the moment. Today, neither of them are here. Their time ran out, and they had no idea it was coming.

I had the privilege of speaking at my colleague Dianna’s celebration of life. To symbolize our fleeting time, I brought an hourglass—half of it covered, so you could only see the sand that had already fallen. I told the room, This is life. We can see where we’ve been, but we have no idea how much time we have left.

This morning, I went for a run. Not far, not fast. I don’t know how many more times I’ll be able to, but today, I still can. And for that, I am grateful.

As real estate agents, we work in an industry that revolves around milestones—buying, selling, moving forward. But beyond the contracts and commission checks, the real gift is today. Embrace it. Be present. Be grateful. Because one day, today will be gone.
